Obituary


John Appelt, reared in Bisbee until May of 1988, died in Tucson July 14, 1999, at the age of 22.

He was born in Sierra Vista, August 25, 1976, the son of Vernon Robert and Linda Marie Hannon Appelt.

His family moved to Germany and he was graduated from Frankfurt American High School in May 1994. He returned to Arizona the following year to attend the University of Arizona, Tucson, where he was graduated in May of 1999 with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Administration.

While attending the university, he was on the deans's list twice, and served an internship with Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms officials. He also serverd with Service Learning, working with at-risk youth and the elderly. He also worked in the office of the provost at the U of A, and was a teacher's assistant in a criminal justice class. He was an accomplished athlete, active in baseball, raquetball, hiking and jogging.

His parents said he was a loving, kind and helpful son, brother and friend, known for helping the less fortunate.

Survivors include his parents of Germany; his sister, Donna Appelt of Las Vegas, NV; his paternal grandmother, Ethel M. Appelt of Greenport, N.Y.; his fiance, Leigh Rosen of San Jose, CA; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Those wishing to send donations in Mr. Appelt's memory have been asked to direct them to the John Appelt Fund at the University of Arizona School of Public Administration and Policy, McCleland Hall 405, Tucson, Ariz. 85721. The fund supports internships for work with at-risk youth and the elderly. Monies are used to buy paint and equipment for use by interns in cleaning up graffiti on buildings and walls, as well as cleaning of yards for elderly persons, at no cost. The program was created by Dr. Neil Vance, a U of A professor.

A memorial service for Mr. Appelt was slated for 2 p.m. July 22 at Dugan Funeral Chapel, with his uncle, Robert Hannon officiating. Burial of his cremations are to be private at a later date. Arrangements are by Dugan's.
